Fun With Batteries (the Gas Bike Needs One)


So you can buy lithium replacements for your lead batteries on your bikes, now, right?  A basic lithium cylindrical cell is, what, about 3.2V nominal?  So 4 together is around 14V, or about the same as a “12V” lead acid.  …and me sitting here with 12 little bitty Sony LiMnO2 cells with no home.

A little soldering, a little heatshrink (#notaturnigy) and bingbangBOOM, you gotcha lithium motorcycle battery replacement.

  1. 5 times lighter, packs more punch. I still wonder why vehicles (cars and motorbikes alike) still use lead acid batteries. Can the alternator recharge them or do you need some extra hardware inbetween?

    • I’ve been told the charge profiles for lead and lithium are identical up to about 80% of the lithium high voltage. Since these are running at about 80% when they’re at 14V (which is cutoff for lead charging) it should be fine.

  2. FWIW, I’ve got a Shorai LiFePo battery in my FJR-1300 now. It’s amazingly light. It literally feels like an empty plastic shell and is 2/3 the size of the OEM lead-acid (they supply dense foam padding)

    The major advantage is it doesn’t sulfate after sitting for a while.

    The only downside is if it’s REALLY cold (in the low ’50s) it wants some current to warm itself up… i.e. it’ll not start on the first crank, but it’ll always start on the second. The good part is you don’t get “low ’50s” in Florida very often 🙂

    I was going to put one in my SV-650 but instead I traded it in on a Zero SR.
