This is a pretty common problem with the cheaper hub motors – the wiring going into the hub through the axle isn’t particularly well protected. For one reason or another, this scooter had some chafing and wear on the wires, and the first attempt to fix it didn’t quite do the job. Here’s what that looked like:
It may have actually worked briefly, but it certainly didn’t hold up. I cut that all out, got to some clean wiring, pulled the old stuff out of the axle and fed the clean stuff through. Here’s what the axle looks like now:
